Use This Free Tool to Improve Your Website Speed & Performance

Hey everyone. Today, I want to share with you a cool tool that you can use to evaluate your website performance, how fast your website is loading, and make sure that you will be included in the search results when someone’s looking for your business. The goal is to make sure that your website is not holding you back and that it’s performing the best it can. This is a free tool, and I want to walk you through the steps in using it, where to find it, and how it will benefit you.

Google Lighthouse | Website Performance Monitoring Tool

The first step is to go into Google, Google Lighthouse, or just Lighthouse. You will find a spot to add that as an extension if you’re in the Google Chrome browser. Install that extension, and after that, pull up your website.

Once you have your website pulled up in a tab, you need to click on your extensions up in the top of your browser. It’s going to pull up Google Lighthouse. You’ll see a tab pop up in the top right that has a lighthouse on it. It has a blue button that says generate report. It also has a gray gear icon that is up in the top right corner. Make sure you wait to hit generate report, because you want to make sure you find out what you’re actually generating a report for.

Website Performance Test

Click on the gear icon, and make sure that all the categories are checked in the dropdown. Categories include Performance, Accessibility, Best Practice, SEO, and Progressive Web App. Those should be checked by default. With everything checked, run the program. This will allow you to see the entire layout of what is going on with your website. You can obviously uncheck what you don’t want to see. There is also a section called Device, make sure this is checked. You want to test both of these, but you have to test each individually. There are separate desktop and mobile versions.

First Report

Hit “Generate Report” after choosing either desktop or mobile to see what that looks like. You will receive a breakdown of the report. You can verify if the desktop or mobile report was run by looking at the URL, you’ll actually see mobile or desktop in there. If you’re wondering which one you ran, look in that URL and you will see that.

Website Performance Metrics

That report will give you all the information that you want to see about your website. At the very top, they give you a breakdown of four different items, your Website Performance, your Website Accessibility, your Website Best Practices, and your SEO. The breakdown is in a circle, and it is rated from 1 to 100 with 100 being the best it can be. The circle turns green the closer you get to the top.

Website Optimization

Each one of these categories is broken down underneath that. The breakdown shows you your metrics and your opportunities for improving that category. The first thing you’ll see is Website Performance. It will show the performance followed by the metrics. What was the first content, the time to interact, your speed index, your total blocking time. It goes through a number of items and then it shows you opportunities underneath that and how you can actually improve that.

You might need to properly size your images or eliminate a render blocking resource. The metrics show you those opportunities as a drop down and dives into that to give you more detail on how you can actually go into the back of your site and make the changes that need to happen in order to optimize your website. Then it also gives you the diagnostics. That’s going to give you even more information. And then it will go to the next category.

Website Accessibility

The next category is Accessibility. In accessibility, you receive the ranking, which is identified by your number and the colors green, yellow, or red if really bad. It also gives you the contrast, names and labels, audits that you passed and ways that you can improve that.

Website Best Practices

The next section is best practices. It’s going to tell you what you can change in that. General items, trust and safety, audits you passed and so on.

Website Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Then you have an SEO section below that, which will do exactly the same thing as above, showing you how to improve Search Engine Optimization and what opportunities exist to improve it.

Maximize Your Website Speed & Performance

This is a really cool tool, but you must make sure you test it on mobile and desktop. The desktop could hit 100 on everything, and yet still not be optimizable for mobile. A lot of people search via mobile, so make sure you don’t miss that. Remember that both reports for desktop and mobile run inside of Lighthouse, which can be toggled back and forth up in the browser. This is a great tool that will help you show up in search engine results more efficiently because the performance of your website is the best it can be with what you’ve got.
